A country experience on the doorstep of Sydney.

Purple Noon Gallery: Town and Country ~ Hiren Patel

7 Mar to 28 Mar 2020

Sydney artist Hiren Patel exhibits a collection of recent landscape paintings.

Hiren Patel's vistas range from urban backdrops and recognisable landmarks, to the serene and beautiful rural landscapes of the Hawkesbury and beyond. This recent body of work unveils a softened detail and warm confidence that presents landscape colours in rich, textured combinations. Hiren’s paintings portray the mood, atmosphere and activity of scenes, both urban and rural, offering a series of uplifting paintings of exceptional character.

In a change of manner, and turning away from the fine finish and detail to which Hiren has mostly aspired, his contemporary ‘Impressionism’ aims to capture the momentary, sensory effect of a scene - the impression objects made on the eye in a fleeting instant. To achieve this effect, Hiren moved from the studio to the streets and countryside, painting en plein air and completing works in the studio.

Like the early Impressionists, Hiren has loosened his brushwork and lightened the palettes to include pure, intense colours. To an extent, he has abandoned traditional linear perspective and avoided the clarity of form that had previously served to distinguish the more important elements of a picture from the lesser ones. He focuses almost expressly on representations of the atmosphere and sky, while diminishing the importance of the human figure, if they appear at all. Hiren’s recent collection demonstrates a general preoccupation with the visual perception of the natural world through the application of rough, clearly visible brushstrokes and the blurry, almost ethereal rendering of colour and form.
